Integrated Approach for Deciding Location and Type of Intake for Power Plant – A Case Study

Journal Title: International Scientific Research Organization Journal - Year 2016, Vol 1, Issue 2

Abstract

Power generation in India is carried out through conventional methods like thermal, hydro, nuclear and non-conventional methods of wind, solar, tidal etc. Review of the information shows that majority of power generation in India is through thermal stations followed by hydro and nuclear units. The method of generation depends on different aspects, availability of resources and policies decided by the competent authority from Government of India. In either of the method uninterrupted water supply required for different components of power plant plays an important role. The water supply can be met through adjoining bodies that include river, reservoir or sea. There are different aspects in deciding the location and type of structure that ensures continuous water supply to the power plant. In case of intake structure located on river, the aspects to be considered during the study include identification of changes in bank line, study of change in river channel, proximity to the plant, availability of land for raw water pump house and protection measures required in the vicinity of intake. In this paper, an attempt is made to integrate these aspects in deciding the location and type of intake for thermal power plant located on bank of river Burhi Gandak near Muzaffarpur. The studies have been carried out to decide location and type of intake and to derive schematic of intake structure and plinth level of raw water pump house.
