INTERHEMISPHERIC ASYMMETRY OF THE N200 SUBCOMPONENT LATENCY: A NEW PARAMETER OF MEDIAN NERVE SOMATOSENSORY EVOKED POTENTIALS ASSESSMENT IN HEALTHY ADULTS

Abstract

Introduction. For evaluation of the effects on sensory inputs influenced following the poststroke interhemispheric sensorimotor disintegration, the tools and procedures of clinical neurophysiology quantified in SI units are needed. Detailed statistical analyses have proved that in healthy adults the latency of N20 peak onset (SEP; N20o) recorded from one contralateral parietal (CPc) hemisphere is the best standard parameter among normal values. Such responses are also evoked in ipsilateral parietal (CPi) hemisphere. Materials and methods. We examined N20o parameter of SEP in 20 subjects of both sex (9 men and 11 women aged 39,16 ± 12,56 on average) following bilateral stimulation of median nerves. Results. Following stimulation of right (R) then left (L) median nerves and using CP-Fz leads of recordings (rec), we have collected SEPs simultaneously from CPc and CPi in the adult healthy right handed volunteers height (H) 173,32±10.18 cm on average. In comparison with N20, the mean N20o latency values (LMV) from CPi were significantly longer both for R (P=0.001) and for L (P=0.008) stimulated subjects. Irrespective to side of stimulation and recording, only the LMV of N20o correlated with H (Corr): R-recCPc-Corr r=0.53, P=0.008. R-recCPi-Corr r=52, P=0.007. L-recCPc-Corr r=68, P=0.0004. L-rec-CPiCorr r=0.55; P=0.007. Conclusion. The interhemispheric asymmetry of the N20o subcomponent latency can be the new time parameter of the assessment of the median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials in healthy adults who declare right handedness. This parameter should be used to assess the interaction between the hemispheric afferent transmissions in patients after stroke.
