International Physical Activity Questionnaire – polish long version
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2013, Vol 29, Issue 1
Abstract
In the contemporaty civilization there is an apparent need of more precise definitions of physical exercise in different domains of the human life. The success of intervention strategies, as well as their effect on health, depends on proper understanding of the factors determining physical activity. The level of physical activity is assessed in a given population using questionnaires. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) is believed to be one of the best questionnaires in the world. The paper presents the long form of this questionnaire, officially approved as the Polish version. The long IPAQ form measures physical activity in (MET-minutes/week units) in various domains of the everyday life: at work, while traveling, doing housework or leisure activities and sports. It measures the time spent sitting at weekdays and weekends. It allows easy classification of the respondents' physical activity into three categories: low (below 600 MET-minutes/ week), moderate (600-1500 lub 600-3000 MET-minutes/week) and high (above 1500 or 3000 MET-minutes/week). It measures not only the weekly energy expenditure, but also the energy expenditure in each domain. This allows to isolate the energy expenditure resulting from doing each type of activity (walking, moderate and vigrous exercise). Therefore, the long IPAQ form is most often used in very detailed analyses, for e.g. policy planning or intervention actions. This paper discusses the content of the long IPAQ form as well as the methodological problems due to using the questionnaire in Poland. The problems concernmainly the survey technique, data cleaning and exercise classification.
