Journal Title: The Indian Practitioner - Year 2014, Vol 67, Issue 10

Abstract

A community based interventional study on type 2 diabetes was undertaken among perimenopausal women in the urban slum community of Cheetah Camp, an urban slum community of Mumbai. Such an interventional study was never done before in an urban slum community of Mumbai. A total of 201 women were enrolled in the sample study population. The interventional measures in the form of a package consisting of, health education, nutritional education, yogic asanas & consistency in antidiabetic drugs were carried out for 12 months. Regular bimonthly follow up of urine & blood sugar levels were done. We found out the effect of interventions on urine & blood sugar levels. At the end of 12 months it was found that more than half, that is, 62.7% patients showed fasting blood sugar levels less than 100 mg/dl and 91.055% women had postprandial blood sugar levels < 180 mg/dl. We found absence of blood sugar in urine. These encouraging results definitely show the beneficial impact of interventions.
