Intraoral Exostoses. Etiology, morphology and treatment.

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2018, Vol 71, Issue 2

Abstract

Exostoses are bone malformations located mostly in the midline of the palate and the lingual side of the mandible. Exostoses can grow and cause a problem while constructing and using removable dentures. The etiology of exostoses has not been fully explained. It is suggested that chewing forces from may trigger exostoses benign but chronic inflammatory processes running in the bone or adjacent tissues. Exostoses are built with bone tissue and therefore they are visible on the X-rays same as surrounding bone. They are not delineated from the surrounding bone. The treatment of exostoses is limited to surgical removal, although most of the changes do not require removal and can only be observed. As all proliferative changes, exostoses should be differentiated from benign and malignant neoplastic processes. The final diagnosis is always determined by the result of histopathological examination. Surgical removal of exostoses located on the lingual surface of the mandible can be an important element of night sleep apnea treatment.
