Journal Title: Medya ve Din Araştırmaları Dergisi - Year 2018, Vol 1, Issue 2
Abstract
Islamophobia is a concept that has emerged as a result of the spread of Islam, which is based on Fear, which has otherised, which expresses Islam and Muslim hostility. Historical, cultural and theological, political, economic, behavioral, and communicative reasons are important elements in the formation of Islamophobia. The spread of social media practices, especially Twitter, where ideas were freely expressed, led to a rapid increase in Islamophobic shares. In this study, Islamophobia was studied in the case of cartoons shared between August 13, 2009 and October 15, 2018 on the Twitter account of Charlie Hebdo magazine. The study found that 38 of 6123 tweets shared in Charlie Hebdo magazine Twitter account were direct Islamophobic cartoons. Comments on caricatures were excluded from the evaluation. The five caricatures that were considered important were analyzed in a descriptive way by using semiotic analysis techniques. According to the analysis, in cartoons shared in the journal's Twitter account, Islam is positioned as a perverted, reactionary religion associated with terrorism, whereas Muslims are portrayed as a tyrant, an ape-like child abuse, far from the life of a terrorist, migrant, community, who brutally massacred each other. The study is important in the context of how Charlie Hebdo shared Islamophobic elements through Twitter.
