Investigation Of Stroke Occurrence Time In Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke Subtypes
Journal Title: Journal of Neurological Sciences-Turkish - Year 2005, Vol 22, Issue 2
Abstract
Background and Purpose: The influences of seasonal variations and temperature changes on onset of acute cerebrovascular disease were previously reported. The aim of this study is to investigate whether there are relationships between daily circadian rhythm, month changes or seasonal variations and two big stroke subtypes (ischemic and hemorrhagic). Methods: A consecutive series of 1199 stroke patients were evaluated retrospectively and prospectively. The patients (n=595), in whom the onset time was known, were included in this study. Stroke patients were grouped as ischemic and hemorragic stroke. In evaluation of diurnal rhtym, we documented only patients (n=193) in whom time onset was known. Results: Four-hundred and forty patients (73.9%) with ischemic strokes (IS) and 155 patients (26.1%) with hemorrhagic storkes (HS) were identified. It was observed that the frequencies of IS and HS cases were higher between 06:01 and 12:00 hours. The incidance of IS was the highest (12.9%; n=57) in april and the incidance of HS was the highest (12.9%; n=20) in march and may months. The greatest portions of both IS and HS occurred in spring season , and the ratios were (34%; n=150 and 34.8%; n=54) respectively. The relationships between storke subtypes and stroke occurrence time periods (day, month, season) were not statistically significant. Discussion: In this crossectional study, we found that both stroke subtypes had morning onset and mostly ocurred in spring season. There was not a statistically significant difference between two big stroke subtypes and stroke occurrence time.
