Investigation of the Effect of Some Organic Fertilizers on the Oil of Lemon Verbena (Lippia citriodora L.) and Its Antibacterial Effects

Journal Title: International Journal of Farming and Allied Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 2, Issue 20

Abstract

The present study has sought to investigate the effects of animal fertilizers, animal fertilizer vermicompost, and saw dust vermicompost on the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of lemon verbena essence with four treatments and five iterations in the format of complete random blocks. Morphological properties have also been measured. Variance analysis shows a significant difference between the applied treatments in terms of the stem wet weight, root dry weight, and essence weight. Using the mass spectrometer device, the kinds and percentages of main components of essential oils in the samples have been determined. According to the results, the most effective compounds, which have been detected in the samples, are Z-Citral, E-Citral, Gamma-Element, spathulenol, Germacrene D, Eugenol, dilemonene, nerol, and lenaloull. Variance analysis demonstrates a significant difference between most of these compounds. Moreover, based on the comparison of effective compounds amounts,it has been observed that E-Citral with 24.83% of animal manure vermicompost treatment involves the maximum amount of effective materials while leneloull with 0.17% of treatment with indicator has the least amount of effective materials. Furthermore, the cultivation of Escherichia coli bacterium (usually abbreviated to E. coli) and then injection of Lippia citriodora L. oil into it show the resistance of this bacterium to Lippia citriodora L. oil, which can be ascribed to the diameter of the obtained corona. It should be noted the results may vary depending on the contribution of different parameters such as oil preparation method, maintenance conditions, and movement of the samples.
