INVESTIGATIONS OF ROTARY SLIDE BEARINGS OF POLYMERS IN A WATER ENVIRONMENT
Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2012, Vol 245, Issue 5
Abstract
This article presents investigations of the wear of polymer slide bearings. PE-UHMW and composite PTFE were used to manufacture these bushings. A test rig for the rotary movement of cylindrical bearings was constructed. The internal surface of a cylinder made of polymer was the test sample, and an external surface of a convex cylinder made of acid resistance steel 316 with a roughness surface Ra = 0.35 – 0.4 μm was the anti-sample. The diameter of an anti-sample was 35mm. The width of the joint was 10mm. The load was 230 N, and the linear velocity was 0.16 m/s. For cooling and lubrication of the friction junction, water in a closed system was used. Images of the working surfaces before and after the tests are presented, analyses of the modes of wear are made, and the values of wear are determined with aid of the weight method. A seven times larger resistance of elements made of PE-UHMW for abrasion was found when compared to composite PTFE.
