IVAN BOBERSKYI – THE FOUNDER AND THE IDEOLOGICAL INSPIRER OF UKRAINIAN SPORTS CIRCLE IN THE ACADEMIC GYMNASIUM IN LVIV

Abstract
The autor analyzes the contribution of the Ukrainian pedagogue and specialist in the physical edu-cation, Professor Ivan Boberskyi (1873–1947) to the creation and development of the Ukrainian Sports Circle at the Academic gymnasium in Lviv. By the end of 1906 Ivan Boberskyi organized the first Ukrainian center of physical culture (tilovychovannya) at the Academic Gymnasium. It was the first center in the education institution and the term “sport” in the Ukrainian Sports Circle has never been used before. The members of the Ukrainian Sport circle were good at: football (kopanyi myach), hockey (hakivka), skiing (leshchety), skating (sovhy), sledging (sankarstvo), tennis (sytkivka), swimming, cycling (nakolesnytstvo), athletics etc. Different sport competitions and physical culture (ruchankovo-vocal perfomances were organized in Lviv). In such a way Ivan Boberskyi popularized cultural education work. The section of football in the mort successful. At the beginning football matches took place only between the teams of the sports circle, but later the Ukrainian Sports Circleteams took part in the competitions with other societies and clubs, such as: Ukrainian, Polish, Chech, Jews. In 1909 the member of the Chechs Football club “Slavija” Vjacheslav Lyomoz was invited by Ivan Boberskyi to improve the sport skills of the Ukrainian Sports Club. Before the First World War the sportsmen of the Ukrainian Sports Circle took part in sport competitions in different towns of Galicia, such as: Ternopil, Stryi, Peremyshl. Ivan Boberskyi paid a great attention to the circle’s attributes and symbols. For this purpose special sport clothes, reward decorations, signets, certifications and advertisments had been worked out. Ivan Boberskyi prepared and published the first methodological worcs concerning the rules of different sport events of the Ukrainian Sports Circle. He tried to explain the history of the Ukrainian Sports Circle in the press of Galicia. His articles and notes were published in the Ukrainian periodicals and the reports of Lviv academie gymnasium. During 1906–1914 many famous sportsmen and sport specialists were educated in the Ukrainian Sports Circle by Ivan Boberskyi. It was a great example and motivation for the establishment of different sports circles in other towns of Galicia, such as: “Syanova Chaika” (gymnasium in Peremyshl), “Podillya” (gymnasium in Ternopil), “Sich” (in Stryi, later renamed into “Skala”). The Ukrainian Sports Circle greatly influenced the development of the sport among the Ukrainian community in Galicia before the First World War. Ivan Boberskyi was known as a guardian and spiritual father of the Ukrainian Sports Circle. Different sport events were popularized by the Ukrainian sports circle at many Ukrainian educational institutions in Lviv and latter on in Galicia. It influenced the raising of national consciousness and patriotism.
