Abstract

We live in an alert and dynamic world, in which the daily events are more and more unpredictable. We have access to a large amount of information about national and European politics and, consequently, our opinions and general culture are shaped by them. From the perspective of political sciences, things are very complex, but the attention is now centered on concepts such as the rule of law, human rights, democracy, and populism. If we look at Europe, we can easily see its multi-civilizational features coupled with political and identity uncertainties. The European Union (EU) is facing now an identity crisis and the solutions are yet to be implemented. Not only are the above concepts the focus of the political scientists, but other phenomena such as massive migration, the refugee crisis, and the undemocratic practices of some Member States have also become a subject of research and an occasion to rethink the perspectives of the united Europe. In his volume After Europe, Ivan Krastev brings an original point of view based on the idea that the “good things” from which the nations of the continent have benefited up to this point, cannot continue without a reformulation of the politics regarding the relationships between the states, the reconciliation between the individual and the collective will, the management of the continuous incoming of refugee waves and, last, but not least, the consolidation of a common paradigm of democracy based on universally recognized values and principles.
