Journal Title: Lex portus - Year 2019, Vol 16, Issue 2

Abstract

April 20-21, 2019, the Odessa department of the League of Students of the All-Ukrainian public organization “Ukrainian Bar Association” held the All-Ukrainian School on the maritime law for the ninth time! Such events and their support by the leading law firms and the educational institutions specializing in practical and theoretical issues of the maritime law are more important than ever for revival and prosperity of the maritime industry of Ukraine. They allow young people to engage in solving current maritime problems, provide them with legal support, share valuable experiences and acquire practical skills in legal work on resolving disputes and finding the best and the most effective ways to get out of problematic situations. For two days, the participants studied a variety of concepts related to the elements of the maritime law: the documentary provision of maritime transport, various aspects of the use of a bill of lading, types of a bill of lading, types of charters, duties and rights of a seaport captain, the nature of demurrage and dispatch money. On real examples from practice, divided into teams, the event participants discussed the ways to best resolve the proposed controversial situations and form effective legal positions. The participants of the event also learned to adequately defend the rights of clients in the administrative, the civil and the economic processes, plunged into the cozy atmosphere of the streets of the warmest southern Ukrainian city and the largest seaport of Ukraine, visited the master classes of practicing lawyers of the top law firms that revealed the secrets of the management and the protection of maritime business, the rights of seamen and everything that has a direct legal relationship with the maritime business. Discussions about the situation regarding the appointment and realization of powers by captains of the seaports of Ukraine have been extremely interesting, and the solutions that found and proposed for solving the crisis situation, have provided opportunities for the formation of a new legal position on this issue. The participants of the School did not disregard their attention to the renewal of the Maritime Doctrine of Ukraine, defining its special role in defining the strategy and the main directions for the further development of Ukraine as a naval state.
