İZMİR DEPUTY HALİDE EDİP ADIVAR AND THEIR ACTIVITIES IN THE GRAND NATIONAL ASSEMBLY OF TURKEY (1950-1954)

Abstract

Halide Edip Adivar, one of the leading female intellectual and writer of the Republican Period. She has some contributions to the National Struggle was seen as an exemplary figure among the Turkish women of this era. Adivar left Turkey with political motives in the mid-1920s and remained abroad until 1939. She returned Turkey in 1940 and was elected an independent Izmir deputy in 1950. The importance of having a famous writer and political personality in terms of intellectual accumulation makes her activities as a deputy important and interesting. In this study, legislative proposals and speeches of Adıvar will be use to discuss her actions in the Assembly. At a time it will be analyzed her views on the main issues of Turkey and on the policies of the Government of the Democratic Party. When her activities in the TBMM are examined, it can be seen that her importance on education. It can be seen also that she proposed to be among the national holidays by seeing 14th of May as a turning point. In addition to this, instead of rejecting single-party practices from the beginning, she objected to the single-party mentality; and emphasizing the freedom of thought.
