JAPAN’S POST-COLD WAR SECURITY AND DEFENCE POLICY

Journal Title: Scientific Journal of the Military University of Land Forces - Year 2014, Vol 173, Issue 3

Abstract

This article is a voice in the discussion on the foreign and security policy of contemporary Japan. The author juxtaposes historical background and the Japanese policy in XXI century. The main problem and challenge of the relations with neighbouring countries is still the territorial dispute with Russia over the Kuril Islands, with China over the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands and with South Korea over the Dokdo/Takeshima Islands. These conflicts have not been resolved yet. The author is putting forward the idea that Japan as a civilian power will change its status into a political power and will engage more in world affairs. Japan should take responsibility for the stabilization of East and South-East Asia. In the author’s opinion, Japan as a proactive contributor to peace needs to contribute to peace and stability, particularly in Asia and the Indian Ocean area. There are two larger objectives of Japan’s foreign and security policy: the maintenance of the US-Japan alliance and participation in global peacekeeping operations.
