Abstract
In the cultural landscape of Bangladesh, Zahir Raihan stands as a prominent figure. Though widely known as a successful filmmaker, his contributions transcend cinema, extending profoundly into literature. In post-1947 East Bengal, then East Pakistan, Raihan distinguished himself by not merely limiting his creativity to writing; he actively experimented with themes and narrative styles. His first and only published collection of short stories, ‘Surya Grahan’, vividly portrays the social, cultural, and historical depths of Bangladesh. His works capture the essence of rural life, the historical significance of the Language Movement, and the harrowing struggles of the 1971 Liberation War. Through Raihan’s unique artistic lens, he portrayed the lives in remote Bengali villages alongside the poignant narratives of the freedom struggle, effectively uncovering layers of social injustice and humanity's disregard within each storyline.
