JOB ATTRIBUTE PREFERENCES OF MILLENNIALS
Journal Title: MANAGERIAL CHALLENGES OF THE CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY - Year 2018, Vol 11, Issue 2
Abstract
Empirical studies on Millennials’ (born between 1982 and 2001; Strauss & Howe, 1991) perceptions of desirable job attributes and work values have produced contradictory results (Deal, Altman, & Rogelberg, 2010). The purpose of this study was to provide insight into the preferences of Romanian young undergraduates for job and organizational attributes of a future employer. A list of 31 job and organizational attributes was used to explore the attributes that attract Romanian Millennials. The respondents (198 young undergraduate students) had to rate the attributes in terms of importance and then to select those attributes that would describe an ideal employer in their views. The five most important job and organizational attributes for Romanian Millennials were: “work-life balance”, “job security”, “good relations with the supervisor or manager”, “opportunities for development within organization”, and “good fringe benefits”. The least important attributes were “location” and “size of the organization”, “variety in daily work”, and “dynamic and future-oriented organization”. In describing an ideal employer, Millennials rated the following attributes as being the most important: “relaxed work atmosphere and friendly coworkers”, “work-life balance”, “job security”, “flexible working hours”, and “relatively stress- free working environment”. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed.
