Abstract
Aim: In this cross-sectional study, it was aimed to evaluate general health status, depressive symptom levels and daily living activities of elderly living in a nursing home. Methods: The study was conducted in a nursing home in the provincial centre of Kayseri in 2016. A socio-demographic questionnaire, the Geriatric Depression Scale, Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale were used for data collection. The data from 105 subjects were analyzed. Chi square test was used to assess categorical data while unpaired t test and one-way ANOVA was used to assess quantitative data. Results: Mean age was 77.2±8.7 years in the study population. 58.1% were men, 48.6% were illiterate and 6.7% were married. General health status and sleep quality were considered as poor in 27.6% and 33.3% of the study population respectively. Of subjects, 63.8% reported that they have a chronic disease. When activities of daily living was assessed, it was found that 4.8% was found to be dependent in activities of daily living and 52.4% in instrumental activities of daily living while 61.9% had definitive depressive symptoms. It was found that dependency rate was increased by advancing age; that female subjects were more dependent in instrumental activities of daily living. Dependency rate was decreased by increasing level of education; and the dependency rate was higher in unmarried subjects. The proportion of patients with definitive depressive symptoms was significantly higher in women and older adults with perception of poorer general health status when compared to remaining subjects. Conclusion: It was concluded that poorer sleep quality increases dependency in activities of daily living; while advancing age and lower educational level increases dependency in instrumental activities. Depression was common among female subjects who were more dependent in instrumental activities.
