Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pediatrics - Year 2019, Vol 10, Issue 3
Abstract
Background: Exclusive breastfeeding(EBF) for the first 6 months of life is now considered as global public health goal that is linked to reduction of infant morbidity and mortality, especially in the developing countries. Despite several benefits for both infant and mother, its prevalence is low worldwide. The research in this field is vital to explore any barriers so as to develop strategies for raising awareness and improving breastfeeding rates. The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge and attitudes regarding breastfeeding among post natal mothers.Material and methods:A hospital based cross sectional study was conducted in the month of October 2018 at Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences, a tertiary care hospital in Karnataka, India. A total of 400 postnatal mothers who had delivered at our institute were included in the study. A pretested, semi structured questionnaire was used to collect data. This questionnaire included socio demographic characteristics of the participants, knowledge regarding breastfeeding and IIFAS questionnaire to assess attitude towards breastfeeding. Results: Among total 400 mothers,210(52.5%) mothers had initiated breastfeeding within 1 hour of birth and majority (87%) had a good opinion about colostrum and its importance in maintaining body’s immunity. 68% of the mothers felt EBF to be given till 6 months of life. Only 36% of them were considering to continue breastfeeding till 2 years of age. 80% of the mothers were aware of burping after each feed. 65.5% of the mothers agreed that breastfeeding increases mother infant bonding and 77.75% of the mothers stated that breast milk was the ideal food for the babies. In our study, the IIFAS scale showed neutral attitude towards breastfeeding, Conclusion: The present study concluded that mothers have a good knowledge regarding breastfeeding practices and neutral attitude towards breastfeeding. Health care providers should utilise every opportunity to educate the mother during antenatal and postnatal visits and further studies should focus on factors that influence the breastfeeding practices in a participatory manner in the community.
