Knowledge and Awareness of Guidance Counselors About Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder and Specific Learning Disability

Journal Title: Turkish Journal of Child and Adolescent Mental Health - Year 2020, Vol 27, Issue 1

Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the level of knowledge and awareness of primary and secondary school guidance counselors about attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and specific learning disorder (SLD), and whether there was a relationship between the counselors’ prior education on these disorders and knowledge and awareness levels. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive study examining the level of knowledge and awareness of ADHD and SLD among guidance counselors who were working in a school at a district of Erzurum. Any sample selection method was not used in the research. Guidance counselors (n=35) who were willing to participate voluntarily were included in the study and asked to complete ADHD and SLD awareness questionnaires. Results: Guidance counselors’ levels of knowledge and awareness about ADHD and SLD were found to be moderate. The findings indicated that guidance counselors who received prior training about ADHD and SLD obtained higher scores as opposed to the counselors who did not. Conclusion: The results of the study showed that it would be beneficial to increase the knowledge and awareness of school counselors about ADHD and SLD. These results were shared with the National Education Directorate of one of the districts of Erzurum province. Based on the results of the study and considering the importance of early diagnosis and intervention for ADHD and SLD, a decision was made to organize in-service trainings in order to increase the knowledge and competency of guidance counselors as well as primary school and secondary school teachers on ADHD and SLD in other districts of Erzurum.
