KONTAKION POETICS OF HAGIOGRAPHY AS A TRANSLATION PROBLEM

Journal Title: ІНОЗЕМНА ФІЛОЛОГІЯ - Year 2014, Vol 127, Issue 2

Abstract

The author makes an attempt to ground kontakion poetics as a linguostylistic and rhetorical phenomenon as well as define criteria for assessing its rendition in translation. The case study is based on the study of tonic meter and a system of repetitions. The source texts for analysis are the Ukrainian hagiographical monument of the 11th–12th centuries – “The Tale, Passion and Encomium of Saints Borys and Hlib” and its translations into English (by M. Kantor, P. Hollingsworth) and into New Ukrainian (by V. Shevchuk).
