Abstract

The presence of Armenians goes back to the fourth century. In this century, number of Armenians visiting Jerusalem increased with the help of constructions of most sacred buildings such as the Church of Holy Sepulchre, the Church of Nativity and the Church of the Sepulchre of Saint Mary. Thus, the number of Armenians who settled in the Jerusalem increased and overtime an Armenian community emerged. Despite the small number of Armenians, they have a privileged status place in Jerusalem. After the Latin Church and the Greek Church, the Armenian Church has formed the third group among Christian groups in the city. Though Armenians live in their own quarter, they were organized as patriarchate in terms of administration. Armenian quarter organized as convent-cathedral and it was a center where Armenians get educated, carry out modern cultural activities, and serves as accommodation for pilgrims. The center has served during the Armenian deportations as well. It patronized the Armenians who came to Jerusalem, tried to meet their needs such as harboring and accommodation. In Jerusalem Armenians population has increased with Anatolian Armenians who settled to the Armenian quarter. In this paper, by mentioning the presence of Armenians in Jerusalem, information will be given about Armenian quarter, demographic characteristics of the Armenians and the Cathedral of St. James with Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem especially in nineteenth century. In addition, the situation of Armenians who settled to Jerusalem because of Armenian deportation and the contributions made to those people will be discussed shortly.
