Length-weight relationship and condition factor of the smoothmouth marine catfish (Carlarius heudelotii) in the gulf of Guinea, Niger delta, Nigeria

Abstract
This study was conducted on the length-weight relationship of the smoothmouth marine catfish, Carlarius heudelotii, caught from the Gulf of Guinea by artisanal fishermen and landed at the Ukpenekang fish-landing site near Ibeno, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The ‘r’ value for the 233 specimens of C. heudelotii sampled during the three months study period (April-June 2009) was 0.97. No significant difference in ‘R2’ (P>0.05) was noticed in the analysis of covariance between the fishes of different sizeclasses and sampling dates. The equation for length-weight relationship was W=1.02L2·4 for the overall sample. The overall condition factor was 1.29 (greater than one).
