LEXICAL THEMATIC GROUPS IN THE OUTLINE OF THE LEXICAL SEMANTIC SPACE OF A LITERARY TEXT (BASED ON MODERN BRITISH WAR NOVELS)

Abstract

The article describes the peculiarities of the main lexical thematic groups (LTGs) in modern British war novels. The interaction of lexical and semantic subsystems determines the trinity of the lexical semantic space unfolding, including semantic, thematic and associative peculiarities of the development of meaning and forming a net of sense relations. Thus, it seems essential to analyze the lexical semantic space of a literary text singling out the corresponding lexical semantic microsystems: lexical semantic, lexical thematic and lexical associative groupings. As a result of a lexicographical analysis and references to background knowledge, there have been defined and inves- tigated the dominating LTGs in the lexical semantic space of modern British war novels, in particular: LTG ‘Military Phenomena’, LTG ‘Emotions’, LTG ‘Human Body’, LTG ‘Medicine and Health’, LTG ‘Natural Environment’. LTG ‘Military Phenomena’ enables authors to represent precisely all the horrors of the war, its devastating con- sequences and complete absurdity. Certainly, this group is closely connected with LTG ‘Medicine and Health’, which is characterized by a constructive artistic-content function. Thus, in combination with LTG ‘Human Body’ it serves to express in full the consequences of the war (physical and psychological traumas) in war and postwar time. On the other hand, the thematic vocabulary of a human body and its movements contributes to the more complete expression of the feelings of heroes, opens an access to their inner world and points to their attitude to the described events as well. The conducted analysis of the lexical semantic filling of a literary text demonstrates that authors focus on the emotions and feelings of people to a great extent. They usually emphasize not the military actions, but rather influence of the war on a person or the feelings caused by war or by recollections of wartime. The distinguished LTGs are closely interconnected and form the basis of the development of the lexical thematic field in the artistic space.
