Journal Title: Eminak - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

This article is devoted to the analysis of concept of «life-cycle servants», which foreign researchers call a rather large group of servants, consisting of young people aged 15 to 30 years. They worked, acquiring life experience outside the own house and have accumulated resources to create their own family. For the first time the concept of «life-cycle service» was introduced by Peter Laslett in 1977, suggesting that the service for the majority of people involved in it, there is only stage in their lives. In the early 1980s John Hajnal compared demographic of several European countries during the second half of the XVIII – early XX century, geographically divided these countries into two groups, having between them a line in the direction from St. Petersburg to Trieste (so-called «Hajnal line»). According to his opinion, «life-cycle service» was very common in the West (servants made up of at least 6% of the population, often more than 10%), and to the east of this line servants were usually less than 2% of the population. A comparison of the available information on European countries with research of some cities of Hetmanschyna has to answer the question: is it appropriate to speak about the «life-cycle servants» according to the local realities of the 60’s – 70’s XVIII century. Does this concept apply only to Western Europe as believed John Hajnal and Peter Laslett? So, let us trace a connection between the main characteristics of the concept – age, marital status, origin, place of residence «life-cycle servants».
