Light Stress Effect on Biomass allocation and Growth Parameters of Phaseolus vulgaris L.

Abstract
Relative growth rate (RGR) and other growth parameters were studied in either water pre-soaked and dry Phaseolus vulgaris L .seeds exposed to white fluorescent light originated from an ordinary fluorescent bare lamp (30 W, 220 V) for limited periods, 1, 2, 3 and 4 hours with a break of an hour between each two successive periods. Other sets of chronic exposure for continuous four hours beside two control sets have been done .The main objective of this study was to test and compare the association between variability in dose of exposure of either types of seeds (soaked and dry) and the values of RGR and other growth variables such as : RSR (root : shoot ratio) , RWR (root weight ratio) , RTD (root tissue density) , SRL (specific root length) , LMR (leaf mass ratio) , SLA (specific leaf area) and SLW (specific leaf weight) .The effect of light stress on carbon allocation in the different plant organs (leaves , stems and roots) was also studied along a plant life – span of fifteen days . Results elucidated that the soaked Phaseolus seeds were more sensitive to light exposure than the dry seeds. The allocation of photosynthates towards the formation of the different plant organs varied with the variation of both the exposure dose and the age of the seedlings. The age of 15 days showed a frequent situation. Sometimes the photosynthates are directed to the stem formation , others towards the root growth and finally was evenly sorted between the three organs .For the seedlings having the age of 30 day after planting (DAP) , results clarified that most of assimilates were directed towards the leaf formation , especially in treatments. At the age of 40 DAP most of photosynthates were consumed in building up the stems. Death was the destiny of all the seedlings resulted from the dry seeds at the age of 50 whereas those of pre-soaked treatment continued. Concerning the relation between RGR and other growth factors, results confirmed that RSR was the most significantly affected parameter at either the levels of dose and age. The relation between all the other factors was generally affected at the age of 15 DAP, followed by the age of 30 DAP. At the level of exposure dose , the highly significantly affected treatments were : T2S , T3S and T1S consequently ( for soaked seeds ) while being : T2D , T1D and T4CD successively ( for dry seeds )
