Journal Title: Journal of Veterinary Advances - Year 2015, Vol 5, Issue 11

Abstract

Retrospective study was conducted to assess the occurrence of rabies and its public health impact in and around Addis Ababa enrolled at EPHI during 2010-2012. The study result revealed 76.5%, 69.9% and 66.8% dFAT confirmed rabies case among dogs during 2010, 2011 and 2012 respectively. The quarantine and clinical examination of different animals at EPHI from September 2010 to September 2012 showed high percentage in animals that came from sub cities of Kolfe, Gullele, Yeka and Bole and were (16.3%, 15.7%, 11.2% and 8.9%) respectively. The result of 1845 humans who came to EPHI during 2010-2012 seeking anti-rabies post exposure prophylaxis medication showed that 89.1%, 4.2% and 2.3% of them were exposed to suspected dogs, humans and cats respectively. Based on the present finding reducing dog bite in younger age group less than 15 years and vaccination of dogs in the peripheral sub-cities with high priority is suggested.
