Low-achieving Gifted Youth: Reflections on Two Decades of Peterson Research

Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2015, Vol 50, Issue 8

Abstract

Based on her experiences as a teacher and counselor of high-ability children and adolescents, the author began, during master’s and doctoral years, to study gifted youth who performed lower than expected academically. As her research agenda developed, she used quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods to explore prevalence of underachievement, gender differences, how underachievers experienced school and family, if and when motivation to achieve changed, and how they experienced developmental challenges. She concluded that change can indeed happen, that convergence of developmental task accomplishments may contribute to increased motivation to achieve, and that school and family systems are involved in underachievement.
