Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2015, Vol 31, Issue 2
Abstract
This article is for illustrative purpose. The Authors, while preparing this text, benefited from both the source texts published in print and studies on the issue we are interested in - in particular a monograph devoted to Ludwik Bierkowski, which was written by the prominent Polish historian of medicine Adam Wrzoska. We would like this text to recall an important and pioneering role Ludwik Bierkowski played in promoting physical culture among young people as one of the most remarkable Polish surgeons of the 19th century.Ludwik Bierkowski, the distinguished Polish surgeon of the 19th century, became famous mainly for introducing anesthesia in Poland. He also became famous as an expert operator and an author of two great atlases for medical students and doctors: an anatomical atlas presenting the human venous, vascular and lymphatic system and the anatomical-surgical atlas containing detailed descriptions and illustrations of surgical operations. Both works have entered the canon of medical literature of that time.
