Mastication loads affecting the mucosa of the mandibular alveolar region beneath lower denture as assessed by FEM

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2010, Vol 63, Issue 11

Abstract

Introduction: Soft tissue damage that occurs under dentures mainly result from friction injuries.Aim of the study: To define frictional phenomena on the mucous membrane interface under lower denture impacted by mastication loads.Material and methods: Based on numerical FEM simulations a denture biomechanics analysis has been carried out. The possibility of detachment and slipping at mucous interface has been assumed. The denture was loaded with destabilizing impact of buccally oriented loads assuming the possibility of an occlusal contact with the opposing denture at the balancing side. Results: Calculated denture loadings of soft tissue showed correlation with pain discomfort experienced by patients. Stresses significantlyexceededpainsensitivity level. Considerable risk of frictional injuries on alveolar processes was confirmed, especially in the cuspid area.Summary: Research results explain the fundamental principles of denture design, which aims at stabilizing the lower denture by means of balanced occlusion bites. Food bolus at the balancing side not only counteracts the loss of adhesion, but also causes reduction of slips on the mucous membrane, which directly reduces the risk of frictional soreness.
