Material, Structural and Technological Analysis of Reconstructed Marquetry Door of 18th Century Boulle Style Bracket Clock from the Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów

Abstract

In the 18th century, one of the most popular elements of interior design and furniture often ornamented with Boulle style marquetries were precisely clocks. The purpose of this work was to analyse the materials, structures and technologies of the marquetry under reconstruction on the back door of a Boulle style bracket clock, registered under the inventory number Wil.3047 as part of the collection of the Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów. The marquetry reconstruction design was made with the use of computer simulations that permitted to prepare several probable variants of the proposed pattern. Reconstruction was based on traditional materials and traditional tools, as similar as possible to the ones that were used in the 18th century.
