Materials used in the treatment of endodontic perforations

Journal Title: RSBO - Year 2009, Vol 6, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction: The endodontic perforations are artificial ducts that connect the endodont with the dental support tissues, and they are responsible for the failure of a considerable percentage of endodontic treatments. The prognosis of the perforations depends on several factors such as: size and location of the duct, root length, access easiness, presence or absence of periodontal communication with the defect, time length between the occurrence of the perforation and its closing, presence of contamination and material utilized in the perforation filling. Objective and literature review: To evaluate the materials presently used in root perforation repair and to compare the results achieved with their use. Conclusion: Of all materials currently used, the MTA and the adhesive restore materials deserve prominence, though always considering, at the moment of making the choice, the previously found conditions such as perforation location, presence of humidity, presence of contamination and accessibility to the site.
