Means and Ways of Expressing the Modality of Potentiality in Modern Chinese

Abstract
The article deals with the analysis of main means and ways of expressing the modality of potentiality in modern Chinese. With the development of society and linguistic science it appears more rational to study the language taking into account the functioning of linguistic factors and structures in the practice of interpersonal communication. The material of the research is represented by the outlines of grammar of Chinese and foreign sinologists. The scientific method used in the research is the functional method, which explores the relationship between language system objects. Based on the fact that the communicative function of language is one of the most important, we conclude that an important aspect of studying modality appears as the basis of the communicative intention of the speaker. The category of modality in the Chinese language needs thorough research aimed at the analysis of the semantic categories in its linguistic expression. The article focuses upon the problem of the functional-semantic microfield of potentiality particularly. Besides, there is no one general idea of classification of main means of expressing the modality of potentiality in Chinese. The obtained results demonstrate that the microfield of potentiality in Chinese is represented by the core part – the potential mood (complement of potentiality) and modal verbs neng, hui, keyi; and the periphery part – modal verbs, adverbs, set expressions. We came to the conclusion that the microfield of potentiality in Chinese is a complete functional-semantic field with a distinct core part and periphery components, which are realized in the speech by the elements of different language levels.
