Measurements of electrical impedance of biomedical objects
Journal Title: Acta of Bioengineering and Biomechanics - Year 2016, Vol 18, Issue 1
Abstract
Purpose: Some basic problems related to the measurements of electrical impedance of biological objects have been presented in this paper. Particularly problems arising from impedance occurring at the sensor - tissue interface in contact measuring methods have been discussed. The influence of finite values of impedances of employed current source and voltage measuring device have also been taken into consideration. Methods: The model of the impedance sensor for the four – electrode measurement method containing the interfacial, source and measuring device impedances has been given and its frequency characteristics obtained by the computer simulation have been presented. The influence of these impedances on the shape of frequency characteristic of the sensor model has been discussed. Results: Measurements of bioimpedance of healthy and anomalous soft tissues have been described. Some experimental results, particularly the frequency characteristics of bioimpedance, have been shown. Conclusions: The presented results of measurement show that bioimpedance can be a valuable source of information about the tissues so measurement of bioimpedance can be a useful supplement to other medical diagnostic methods.
Mechanical behaviour of knit synthetic mesh used in hernia surgery
Purpose: There is a discussion in literature concerning mechanical properties and modelling of surgical meshes. An important feature of elastic modulus dependency on load history is taken into account in this paper, as i...
Effects of the microcrack's shape, size and direction on the poroelastic behaviors of a single osteon: a finite element study
Purpose: In this work, a finite element study is proposed by using the Comsol Multiphysics software to evaluate the effects of microcrack's shape, size and direction on the poroelastic behaviors of a single osteon. Metho...
Measuring the force of punches and kicks among combat sport athletes using a modified punching bag with an embedded accelerometer
The main aim of the study was to design a new system to measure punching and kicking forces as well as reaction times in combat sport athletes. In addition, the study examined whether there were any intergender differenc...
Dynamic loads indicators for take-off – landing sequence in blocks and attacks of elite female volleyball players
Purpose: Dynamic loads during landings of determined by the ground reaction forces (GRFs) may elaborate internal loads and increase the risk of overload knee injuries as the result of performing volleyball jumps many tim...
A novel kinematic model for a functional spinal unit and a lumbar spine
Purpose: The aim of this paper is to present the novel model for the functional spinal unit and spine designed as a rigid mechanism and solve it with methods commonly used in robotics. Methods: The structure of the inter...
