Mechanisms of boundaries management – a theoretical proposition and the results of empirical research

Journal Title: International Journal of Contemporary Management - Year 2012, Vol 11, Issue 3

Abstract

A systemic approach to the organisation as a system which interacts with its environment and has a modular structure, is used to formulate conclusions about the role and significance of boundaries for matter and energy distribution processes within the organisation, and for the processes governing their exchange with the environment. The literature on the subject does formulate conclusions, partially based on present trends and “fads”, that boundaries get blurred, yet this is not reflected by economic reality. Boundaries are not unimportant, periphe¬ral components of the organisation management system, but rather its critical constitu¬ents, determining the ability to properly define the organisation’s activities and be¬haviours of its stakeholders. The purpose of the paper is to propose a theoretical approach to defining boundary man¬agement mechanisms and discuss results of the research steps aimed at the identification of the level of practical utilisation of those mechanisms in Polish business management prac¬tice. The presented research results are part of a broader project undertaken to identify bound¬ary modelling ways and mechanisms as used by Polish enterprises. Adoption of the assumption that the organisation seeks a state of balance with the environment enables identifi¬cation of three primary boundary management mechanisms. These are: extension, shrinking and buffering. The discussion of those mechanisms is a starting point for the rese¬arch aiming at an empirical verification of the boundary management utilisation level by Polish enterprises.
