Medical affair as one of the vectors of Roman Catholic monastic orders in the territory of Volyn (XVII – the first half of the ХІХ century)

Abstract

The article outlined the achievements of Roman Catholic monastic orders in the medical realm in the territory of Volyn during XVII – the first half of the ХІХ century. In particular, the special merit in providing medical services to the population of Volyn belongs to the monks of order of Brothers Hospitallers of St. John of God and Sisters of Charity. They not only took care of hospitals, shelters, mental hospitals, but made an outstanding contribution to the development of the network of medical institutions and nurturing medical staff of the realm in the land, which for many decades outpaced those, that appeared on these lands of Russian Empire in the second half of XIX century. Ultimately, the local medical centres of Brothers Hospitallers of St. John of God and Sisters of Charity, after their abolishment by Russian autocracy, became the basis for the establishment of public medical institutions in the region. At the same time, noteworthy that the monks of other orders, that are not specifically involved in the medical case, as at the heart of their work they put the protection and prevention of health of ward population. Illustrative in this context became the work of Roman Catholic monastik order of Piarists.
