Journal Title: Journal of Disability Management and Rehabilitation - Year 2016, Vol 2, Issue 1
Abstract
Background: Most of the females with intellectual disabilities begin menstruating at the usual time and have regular menstrual cycle like other girls without a disability. However, these girls face extra challenges that other girls may not have. These girls may need extra support and training with hygiene habits. The level of support will vary from none to pervasive. Objective: The aims of this study were to describe the menstrual pattern and level of support for menstrual care of females with intellectual disabilities. Methods: This was an interview based descriptive study conducted on girls with intellectual disabilities and their mothers/care takers attending them. The target participants were 49 mothers/care takers of females with intellectual disabilities and were recruited from two different institutes of Chandigarh. Result: 49 mothers/care takers answered the focused interview. More than half (65%) of the females with intellectual disability had menarche at the age of 12-14 years, for 10% girls it started in the age 15-17 year and for 8% girls age 09- 11 year. The average age of menarche was 13- 14 years. These females have an average 4-5 days of period with regular cycle interval. Most of them were independent in the management of their menstrual period and had no significant medical or related issues. Two thirds were not sent to school during menstruation. Conclusion: Most of the females with intellectual disability were not adversely affected by menstruation, as they had normal pattern of menstruation as any other female. Caretakers can be given knowledge, awareness and training on menstrual management, so that these females can be kept safe from school dropout and sterilization. Key words: Females with intellectual disabilities, menstrual pattern, sterilization
