Metadata for Description of Theatre Plays: A Case Study of Ankara State Theatre Plays

Abstract
Today, one of the most frequently used environments for meeting daily information needs is assuredly the Internet. Users often refer to the Internet to meet the daily information needs related to the branches of arts such as theatre events, which often change frequently and periodically. However, there are deficiencies in the attributions that will provide access to information about theater plays. This study is based on the hypothesis that problems that users may face in retrieving information related to plays can be eliminated by the creation of metadata sets for up-to-date information. From this point of view, a sample data set for the Ankara State Theatre Plays have been defined by conducting a study for the spread of standard data sets in Turkish. The comparison of the main data sets have been developed for the areas identified by examining the literature regarding data sets on the subject of performing arts and the study and practice conducted in Turkey in this regard are evaluated. As a result of the evaluation, a metadata element set (Tiyatro Üst veri Seti - TUS), which is formed by taking into consideration the search items related to the theatre plays within the scope of the requirement of current information requirement has been shown in a sample application study. In order to get opinions and suggestions about the study, a focus-group interview was held with the group selected from Ankara University undergraduate students. As a result of this interviews, it was seen that the information about theatre plays need to be presented in a more flexible, inquirable and easily accessible way in terms of their daily information needs of the users. It has been proposed that the information presented with the metadata set developed would solve the basic problems encountered in retrieving the needed information.
