Metatarsalgia as osteoarticular cause of foot dysfunction

Abstract
Metatarsalgia – painful forefoot – is a term that refers to all metatarsal changes that have anatomical or biomechanical causes. The forefoot (the area extending between the metatarsophalangeal joint line and the tarsometatarsal line) is the most frequent place of pain symptoms within the foot. This is an area where there may be several symptoms related to each other and occurring independently of each other – from more superficial skin lesions through inflammation of soft tissues to pain caused by bone damage of the metatarsus or changes in the joints of the area and restrictions in the function of the foot. This is one of the most difficult diagnostic areas due to the multitude of conditions that can occur here – from trivial problems that do not require complicated treatment, changes requiring orthopedic provision, oncological treatment, and in some cases amputations as well. Effective treatment of a patient with metatarsalgia requires a proper diagnosis and thus cooperation of the entire therapeutic team.
