METHOD OF DETERMINING THE MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE INCREMENT IN THE PROCESS OF METALLIC FRICTION

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2009, Vol 225, Issue 3

Abstract

A description of a frictional heat source is presented and, based on this, an original method of determining the temperature increment in the metallic friction zone is developed. Cases are considered of friction involving wear and wear-free, where maximum the temperature increment occurs. A series of magnitudes characterising friction and wear processes, as well as physical properties of metals, are taken into account. These include, inter alia, coefficient of friction, coefficient of wear, work of friction, geometric characteristics of the friction zone, hardness, thickness, specific heat, and initial temperature. A quantitative example is included to illustrate the maximum temperature increments of selected metals during friction. An important role of thickness in the process of frictional heating of metals is established.
