Methods and materials used in endodontic treatment by dental practitioners – preliminary report

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2009, Vol 62, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction: Advancement in the development of dental materials and equipment facilitates root canal treatment and improves its quality. Literature, however, lacks information on root canal treatment as carried out in dental practices.Aim of the study: To obtain data on methods and materials used in root canal treatment by dental practitioners. Material and methods: A questionnaire study involved 70 dental practitioners. The questionnaire comprised items regarding personal and social data of dental practitioners, and methods and materials used in root canal treatment. Results: Few dentists ever carried out root canal treatment with the use of rubber dam. Most frequent methods of root canal preparation were step-back and traditional techniques. Calcium hydroxide was preferred for root canal disinfection followed by antibiotic-corticoid preparations and metronidazole. Lateral condensation and single point techniques were the most frequent methods of obturation. More than half of the respondents used Endomethasone as a canal sealer, while the remaining ones chose AH Plus or Sealapex. Conclusions: Root canal treatment carried out in dental practices is not fully in accord with the requirements of modern endodontics.
