MIGRATION OF ACTIVE ELEMENTS FROM A LUBRICANT TO THE MATERIAL OF THE FRICTION PAIR

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2011, Vol 238, Issue 4

Abstract

The chemical composition of the external layer of rubbing elements after tribological tests performed using four-ball machine by means SEM/EDS and XPS techniques was investigated. Base oil SAE 30/95 containing 3%w/w ZDDP-based additive package was applied as the lubricant. The results indicate that the surface layer was modified by tribological active elements coming from the additive (mainly by sulphur and phosphorus) as well as by oxygen and carbon. These elements migrated into the material of friction couple. The highest tendency to migrate was shown by oxygen. Carbon was clearly lower, and sulphur and phosphorus were the lowest. Sulphur was present in the external layer in the form of sulphides, and phosphorus in the form of phosphates.
