Abstract
The issues of national economy modernization in countries with economies in transition are discussed. These states are proved to be mostly focusing on the catch-up model of modernization of society and economy on the whole to reach the level of highly developed countries. However, little attention is paid to the fact that there is a possible alternative to this choice: modernization of an outstripping type. This type of modernization appears to be more effective and accumulative, capable of updating the national economy of countries at a fast pace. The key risks, issues and shortcomings the catch-up model of the economy modernization includes in, as well as conditions for transition to the outstripping model are highlighted.
