Modification of Natural Fragmentation Warhead Cases Induced by Laser Beam Remelting
Journal Title: Problemy Mechatroniki. Uzbrojenie, lotnictwo, inżynieria bezpieczeństwa - Year 2011, Vol 2, Issue 3
Abstract
Experimental researches performed by authors were undertaken in order to estimate performances of warhead cases during natural fragmentation and controlled fragmentation involved by laser beam remelting. Fragmentation test showed that laser beam modification of surface by longitudinal and circumferential remelting improves the fragmentation characteristics. The number and mean mass of fragments is greater than for cases fragmenting naturally. The laser paths become privileged place for initiation of fragmentation cracking. Number and mean mass of fragments are directly connected with parameters of laser remelting what will allow using laser technology to induce controlled fragmentation.
