Modulation of some biochemical complications arising from alloxan-induced diabetic conditions in rats treated with Senna occidentalis leaf extract
Journal Title: Journal of Applied Biology & Biotechnology - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 4
Abstract
The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of Senna occidentalis in alloxan-induced diabetic and its complications in Wistar rats. Thirty male Wistar rats with body weight ranging from 180–250 g were selected for the study. Diabetes was induced by single intraperitoneal dose of alloxan injection (150 mg/ kg body weight). Treatment was carried out orally using aqueous and ethanol extracts of Senna occidentalis leaves at 100 mg/kg body weight once daily for 21-days. The fasting blood sugar (FBS), Thiobarbituric acid Reactive Substance (TBARS), alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), serum bilirubin and full blood count levels were evaluated. The result of the study showed decrease in FBS, TBARS, liver enzymes, bilirubin, platelets (PLT) and white blood count (WBC) as well as increase in lymphocytes (LYM) and red blood count (RBC). The result of study showed to a large extent the effects of Senna occidentalis in the management of some complications resulting from diabetes and its complications.
Phenotypic and genotypic diversity of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. manihotis causing bacterial blight disease of cassava in Kenya
Cassava bacterial blight (CBB), caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. manihotis (Xam), is the most important bacterial disease of cassava. There is no information available on the morphological and genetic variability of...
Potentials and challenges of sustainable taro (Colocasia esculenta) production in Nigeria
During the past years, precisely 1965-1980, yam and taro reigned supreme in the Southern parts of Nigeria. Yam was the king and taro the queen. They were then the staple food of choice and were even offered to the gods....
Enhanced fibrinolytic protease production by Serratia marcescens RSPB11 through Plackett-Burman and response surface methodological approaches
A well characterized alkaline metalloprotease enzyme called serralysin with fibrinolytic activity has been reported in the newly isolated Serratia marcescens RSPB11. In view of its potential application in thrombolytic t...
Location and histopathology of seed-borne bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. pisi carried by pea seeds
The present study aims to determine the location and histopathology of seed-borne bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. pisi associated with pea seeds. The pea seeds categorized (asymptomatic, moderately discolored...
Expression analysis of recombinant Vigna radiata plant defensin 1 protein in transgenic tobacco plants
Bruchid resistance is regulated by defensin gene. Vigna radiata plant defensin 1 (VrPDF1) inhibits alpha-amylase activities in insect gut; therefore, insect will die of undigestion starch. VrPDF1 content in mungbean seed...
