MORPHOMETRIC VARIATIONS OF THE ANTERIOR CEREBRAL ARTERY

Journal Title: World Journal of Pharmaceutical and Medical Research - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 2

Abstract

The anterior cerebral artery is major vessels responsible for the blood supply of the internal region of cerebral hemisphere and anatomy of the anterior cerebral artery plays a critical role in surgical treatment of anterior cerebral circulation aneurysms. A thorough description of vascular morphometric variations of the anterior cerebral artery seems to be lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate the anatomical morphometric variations of the A1 segment of anterior cerebral artery regarding the gender and the sides. The study group consisted of 100 subjects (50 males and 50 females), without any intracranial pathologies, that had undergone head computed tomography angiography. The patients with history of cerebral vascular occlusion or stenosis excluded from this study. Using digital ruler with millimeter scale the diameter of the anterior cerebral artery measured at its origin from the internal carotid artery. The results show that, male subjects had a significantly larger diameter of the anterior cerebral artery (1.41 mm) on the right side and (1.53 mm) on the left side compared with females which shows (1.37 mm) on the right side and (1.49 mm) on the left side. The diameter of anterior cerebral artery is larger on left side than the right side in both women and men. Conclusion Female subjects were expected to have a higher incidence of an anterior cerebral artery hypoplasia or aplasia and may by more prone to ischemic complications after surgery, result of anterior cerebral artery aneurysm clipping.
