Motives and benefits of physical activity in middle aged and elderly women’s opinion

Abstract
Background. The purpose of conducted research was to establish the motives for which middle aged and elderly women undertake physical activity, as well as to identify the benefits resulting from it in biological, psychological and social spheres, according to the respondents’ self-assessment. Material and methods. The sample included 33 middle aged and elderly women who attended recreational gymnastics’ classes. The diagnostic poll method and survey technique were applied for the study. Results. The main reasons why the respondents decided to participate in the classes included mostly their readiness to keep fit. Some of them were urged by their families, friends or physicians. The majority of women in question declared having health problems, but nearly one fourth did not admit having suffered any ailments. Thanks to attending the classes, they reported improvement in their self esteem enforced and spirits raised, as well as being able to handle stressful situations better. They also observed better relations with their families and friends. A bit lower, but positively, they gauged changes in biological sphere, body shape and agility of fulfilling everyday duties. In this field, they pointed out to an improvement in their health condition. Major benefits of physical activity were depicted in psychological and social spheres, whereas biological benefits were less valued.Conclusions. The prevailing motive for which middle aged and elder women undertook physical activity was their eagerness to keep fit. To a smaller extend, it resulted from being advised to do so by other people. Middle aged and elderly women observed greater benefits of physical activity in psychological and social spheres, whereas they found it less beneficial for their biological sphere.
