MULTI DRUG RESISTANT BACTERIA ISOLATED FROM UNPASTEURIZED COW MILK FOR NUNU PRODUCTION

Journal Title: WORLD JOURNAL PHARMACY AND PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCE - Year 2019, Vol 8, Issue 10

Abstract

Unpasteurized dairy products such as Nunu and Fura de Nunu plays an important role in the dissemination of food borne diseases. Antibiotic resistance has prolonged the treatment of diseases recently. Antimicrobial susceptibility and resistance test was carried out against dominant multi drug resistant (MRD) bacterial species isolated from the dairy products. Fura de Nunu is a good substrate for the growth and multiplication of microorganism. The identities of bacterial isolates are, Providencia strain UAF-03 (MH924823), Enterobacter sp Strain AB55 (MF407145), Escherichia coli strain AR_0067 (CPO32261) and Lactobacillus fermentum strain K2 (KT183368). The antibiotic profile of the isolates showed resistance to Chloramphenicol (12.0%), Amoxicillin-Clavulanic acid (71%), pefloxacin (70%), Ciprofloxacin (21%), Gentamicin (21%), Rifampicin and ceftriaxone (25%); Tetracycline, Oflaxacin, Septrin and Nalidixic acid (60%); Amikacin (24%) and Erythromycin (52%) and Cefotaxime (33%). Four isolates, notably, Escherichia coli, Providencia sp, Enterobacter sp and Lactobacillus fermentum are resistant to most of the antibiotics. Isolation of antibiotic resistant species from the locally fermented dairy products portends serious health risk to consumers. Good manufacturing practices (GMP) are therefore recommended for wholesome and acceptable product.
