MUSEUM CATALOGUE ARTICLE: A COGNITIVE-COMMUNICATIVE PHENOMENON

Abstract

The publication is about cognitive-communicative features of such message as a museum catalogue article. It deals with communicative tactics of involving the addressee into reception of the pictographic component of the message. It regards, besides, possible functional losses in case of an incomplete communication (caused by the addressee's language deficiency). The object of the study still is a museum catalogue article as a semiotic unity of a reproduction of a canvas and a verbal text annotation. The subject of the analysis in the present study is the specific communication tactics used by the author of an annotation to expand the informational background of a multiple code message and to optimize the perception of an addressee of the iconic and verbal components of a message as a single semantic complex. The aim is to outline the communicative ways and verbal means that optimize manyfold the receptive activity of an addressee of a museum catalogue article. The informational content of the annotation in a museum catalogue article offers two types of information. The content of the first type broadens the mental outlook of the reader, but does not directly affect the reception of the painting. The contents of the second type presents the information that optimizes the perception of a pictorial work shown in the catalogue reproduction. A museum catalogue article is a semiotic multiple code complex that realizes a variety of means and tactics to optimize the activity of an addressee as a catalogue user both as in communicative role of the reader, and in the communicative role of the spectator. Cutting off one of these roles (for example, the inability to read the text of an annotation) greatly impoverishes not only receptive, but also cognitive activity of a museum catalogue user.
