Nanoindentation applied to the study of biomaterials

Journal Title: Recueil de mécanique - Year 2018, Vol 3, Issue 1

Abstract

A biomaterial is a material used and adapted for medical applications. In order to extend the life of the human body, the biomaterial is the alternative most considered by doctors. Metals used as biomaterials have high yield strengths and tensile strengths. In order to characterize the mechanical properties of biomaterials, such as Young's modulus, hardness, contact stiffness, nanoindentation tests have been conducted. In the field of biomechanics, this new non-destructive technique tends to miniaturize specimens experimentally tested, at very small sizes, and reach penetration depths in the impression residual induced by the indentation force, at the nanometer scale. The hardness scale factor values are compatible with absolute hardness. This means that the density of dislocations participates in the deformation process; hence the plastic deformation capacity is dependent on the microstructure.
