Abstract

The Salvatorian Major Seminary started to operate in 1993. The original idea was to build a seminary for various religious congregations working in Tanzania. In 1999 the Seminary transformed into the Salvatorian Institute of Philosophy and Theology becoming a more open institution, where also the lay people could pursue studies of philosophy and theology. However, the seminarians were the majority of students. Lack of the state recognition of the offered programs was a hindrance in attracting non-seminarians. The enrolment of seminarians into the programs started to decrease from the academic year 2007/08. Therefore, the affiliation with St. Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT) was seen as an opportunity to make the institution grow again. The affiliation was effective from the academic year 2010/11. The Institute became a constituent college of SAUT with a new name of Jordan University College. Since then the institution has been growing rapidly. Starting from the academic year 2014/15 the tendency of low enrolment of students in the ecclesiastical programs was reversed thanks to the new congregation that joined the college.
